Health & Safety Polices

Your health and safety policy clearly sets out how you manage health and safety in your workplace by defining who does what; and when and how they do it. Remember, keep it simple and then actually put it into practice.

The Safety Policy should describe how you will manage health and safety in your business and will let your staff and others know about your commitment to health and safety. This will be your health and safety policy. It should clearly say who does what, when and how.

If you have five or more employees, you must have a written policy.

Your statement of general policy should contain the following committments:

  • to provide adequate control of the health and safety risks arising from our work activities;
  • to consult with our employees on matters affecting their health and safety;
  • to provide and maintain safe plant and equipment;
  • to ensure safe handling and use of substances;
  • to provide information, instruction and supervision for employees;
  • to ensure all employees are competent to do their tasks, and to give them adequate training;
  • to prevent accidents and cases of workrelated ill health;
  • to maintain safe and healthy working conditions; and
  • to review and revise this policy as necessary at regular intervals.
